... DID LEWIS CARROLL 'DIE A VIRGIN' ...?

Dodgson's photograph of the actress Ellen Terry, a close lifelong friend. Some have suggested her as a possible paramour or love object.

Lewis Carroll never married and there is no conclusive proof he ever had an affair, however the popular idea he probably died a virgin is quite unlikely. Contrary to popular belief, he enjoyed many relationships with adult women that were very romanticised and flirtatious, leaving the possibility some were sexual, even if he never overtly said that they were. There is also evidence for a rather mysterious and intensely unhappy love affair with an unidentified woman.

Constance Burch. Dodgson befriended her when he was in his early sixties and she was 38 years old. She dined with him in his rooms, went to London with him to see shows, and stayed with him at his sisters' home in Guildford.

Gertrude Thompson, a young artist Dodgson befriended. She holidayed with him by the sea and dined alone in his rooms. She left a memoir of her times with him.
